Chef’s Corner with Frank Corbett

This summer, try cooling off with your own home made frozen fruit drinks and smoothies. They are simple and quick to make. The possible combinations are too many to list but here are the basics. To start, in a blender add equal parts of fresh fruit, ice cubes, yogurt. Blend on medium to high speed until smooth. If the mixture doesn’t want to spin, just add some type liquid like  water, tea, soda or fruit juice till it gets going. Another option is to use frozen fruit to start and less ice. They can be served as a  drink, a dessert or even refreeze as a frozen fruit bar. Some combinations I like are watermelon, Midori and Sprite, blueberry with vanilla yogurt (use Greek yogurt when possible), or a frozen Arnold Palmer, Iced Tea and lemon sorbet. No matter what your combination, it’s a cool way to beat the heat and humidity.

Think Big, Start Small, Move Fast

Recently, Ms. Susan Bixler spoke at The Georgian Club as part of our Meet Your Board Member Speaker Series. Susan Bixler is a recognized author and has written or co-authored seven books.  Her most recent book is The Power of Feedback. She founded Bixler Consulting Group 32 years ago.  It was one of the first companies to focus on the communication and leadership requirements of corporations and businesses.

According to Ms. Bixler, “Thinking big really matters, but you have to start small and move fast.” In other words, we solve problems by thinking big, but no one has the resources to solve the world’s problems instantly. Chef Frank’s Gingerbread Masterpiece

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Georgian Club’s Executive Chef Frank Corbett and his wife, Marie, created an edible castle inspired by Nuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, also known as the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle in the Black Forest. Every year, Chef Frank creates a gingerbread display for the lobby of the club, each one surpassing the immaculate detail of the last.

In 2009, the couple was awarded a “Top Ten” finish in their first ever attempt at the National Gingerbread Competition, held at the Grove Park Inn, in Asheville, NC.  Their winning entry was a “G”-scale model of The General locomotive, stolen during the Civil War’s Great Locomotive Chase.

This year, the ingredients include rice krispy treat ramps, chocolate covered pretzel trees, chocolate rocks, a gum paste alligator, graham cracker crumb dirt, and a shredded wheat roof atop the gingerbread castle. The only inedible ingredients are the Styrofoam base and Christmas lights, which illuminate the club’s lobby every day at 3:00 p.m.

The Georgian Club Gingerbread Castle took approximately 50 hours to complete and weighs over 40 pounds. On December 23rd, the display will be transferred to a local homeless shelter.
